DOI: 10.31508/1676-3793201500002
Abstract
Objective:
To identify the prevalence of congenital anomaly in newborns of São Paulo.
Method:
Case Control Study. Data from Live Birth Declaration of São Paulo, from 2007 to 2011, were used. The sample consisted of 27 564 infants randomly selected in two groups, case and control. Descriptive statistics were applied to analyze the data.
Results:
The prevalence of congenital anomalies was 1.2% of live births. The average age of the mothers was 28.2 years in the group with congenital anomaly and 27.4 in no anomaly, with singleton pregnancy (95.9% and 97.4%), gestational age, from 37 to range 41 weeks (75.5% and 90.2%) and education 8-11 years (53.0% and 90.2%) respectively. Mean birth weight 2853,8g in the group with anomaly.
Conclusion:
The congenital abnormalities were more common in pregnancy to term, single fetus with adequate weight to gestational age. Knowledge of the prevalence of congenital anomalies can serve as a tool for health planning ensuring access and quality of care to women and newborns.
