DOI: 10.31508/1676-379320230003
Abstract
Objective
To characterize the profile and professional qualification of nurses specialized in pediatrics and neonatology in the Brazilian scenario.
Methods
It is a descriptive exploratory study from the survey “Profile of Pediatric Nurses and Neonatologists in Brazil” data set, available in the Brazilian Society of Pediatric Nurses. Data collection was performed using a self-administered electronic questionnaire. For data analysis, descriptive statistics were applied.
Results
Of the 368 participants, 117 were neonatologist nurses and 251 pediatricians, with a predominance of females, married, mean age between 37 and 38 years old, white color/race and with monthly wage income between 2,400.00 to 4,500.00 reais. Undergraduate training in public institutions prevailed; and less than 1/3 of nurses attended residency, with a smaller number of professionals with master’s or doctoral degrees. Most of the experts were working at the time of the survey and reported having only one job in nursing, mostly in a hospital institution.
Conclusion
The study data reveal there is a necessity to expand training opportunities for specialists in the thematic areas, especially with residency, master, and doctoral programs. In addition to training, it is necessary to expand the certification or qualification of specialists. The characterization makes it possible to reinforce the importance of implementing the nursing wage floor law, and reflections on the need for a career plan for specialists.
