Development of an in situ simulation scenario for respiratory failure management in pediatrics

Abstract
Objective
To report the development of an in situ simulation scenario for respiratory failure management in pediatrics by nurses.
Methods
This is a descriptive study, in the form of an experience report, structured in two phases: clinical case development and scenario development. The research team included nurses with specialization and/or experience in pediatrics, as well as a physician specialized in emergency care.
Results
The clinical case was developed through three virtual meetings to identify the child’s respiratory deterioration, monitor hemodynamic parameters, assess the need for oxygen therapy, and analyze the accuracy of participants’ decision-making. The scenario was developed across eight domains: Context; Background; Design; Debriefing; Clinical Judgment; Outcomes; Scenario Script; and Storyboard.
Conclusion
It was possible to develop a structured in situ simulation scenario for respiratory failure management in pediatrics, representing a potentially useful strategy for training nurses in emergency services.
